Jan Groover
Jan Groover was born on April 24th, 1943. As a child she grew up in Plainfield, New Jersey. She studied painting and drawing at Platt Institute. Jan Groover won the 1978 Guggenheim Fellowship award. She died January 12th, 2012. She has published three books: Jan Groover Catalog, Pure Invention PB, Three On Technology:New Photographs. She moved to France with her husband which is where she died.
Jan Groover had many different art styles but her main one was taking photos of utensils. She would ope up a cabinet or something with a bunch of silver utensils and she would photograph them. Her photos didn't have a lot of color they were almost bland. They had a lot of grey, silver and some browns. Most of her photos have a kind of rustic feel to them.
Jan Groover was a lot of things. She was a feminist and she was conservative. Jan Groover wasn't fancy she was middle class. She took photos of middle class things. In her photos she was kind of saying "Hey even though we aren't rich, our stuff is still beautiful."
Jan Groover has helped me to understand that things that might look dull and can be beautiful. Everything can be photographed no matter what they may look like. She allowed me to view daily life objects as something beautiful. Even if we see a fork everyday we can still view it in a different way. You don't always look a fork from the side view, these angles can really change the look of an object.
For this photo I tried to get the same fork layout. It was hard because I couldn't be exact. I also had a green background which made it hard so I had to make the photo black and white which makes it look different. I like how the photo turned out though because I think they look similar. Their photo isn't in black and white which I feel like makes it look better but I was still able to make a similar piece.
The obvious difference here is the fruit used.I didn't have pears which made it difficult so I used apples. It looks like we both used paper behind the photo to add the texture. This was a difficult photo because I ah to get low to take the photo. I think even though I used apples our photos look very similar.
I think these photos are the most alike. We both have the same pattern. I like how the spoons are oriented. My photo is different because the background is white instead of grey. This was hard to take because the spoons gave off a refection and also the spoons had to be in a certain pattern. Also the angle of the photos have to be different.
Artist Statement
My images are very different but still beautiful. I love the color grey that you can see in all of the photos. All of my photos of forks and spoons in them which show that things can still be appealing. I think my photos turned out really well. My photos don't tell a story but they give a new view on things we see in our everyday life.
